The Women Officials' Network Foundation honored MFPE member Barbara Bonsignore as a "Wonder Women of 2011." A "Distinguished Champion of Women's Rights," Barbara shared in this honor with MFPE members who joined her in celebration (L to R): Francile Anderson (former honoree), Barbara, Elizabeth Bauer (former honoree) and Sally Doty.
The guest speaker at our March 2011 meeting was Craig Thiel, the Citizens Research Council of Michigan's Director of State Affairs. Mr. Thiel gave a thorough and detailed analysis of the financial data related to funding of schools in Michigan. His PowerPoint presentation can be accessed at: www.crcmich.org.
The guest speaker at our December 2010 meeting was Michigan State Board of Education Member Elizabeth Bauer. Employing the MBE’s “Universal Education Plan,” Ms. Bauer elaborated on the 21st Century Skills needed by students, including: Problem Solving, Critical Thinking, Self-Direction and Collaborative Teamwork.
Teri Battaglieri, Executive Director of the Great Lakes Center For Research & Practice joined us at our September 2010 meeting. Her presentation included an overview of the Center, including the "Think Twice" project designed to serve as a watchdog to review think tank research on public education issues & policies.

In March of 2010, Yong Zhao, University Distinguished Professor from Michigan State University, presented his perspective on the No Child Left Behind law by discussing the educational recommendations he included in his book entitled Catching Up or Leading the Way: American Education in the Age of Globalization.
MFPE Treasurer, Fern Ettinger, introduced the guest speaker, Mark Fancher, at our December 7, 2009 meeting. Mr. Fancher, ACLU Michigan's Racial Justice Project Attorney, spoke on "Reclaiming Michigan's Throwaway Kids."
Mindy Nathan, Dean of the Tri-County Education Center and MFPE member, describes the high school completion and credit recovery program to visiting MFPE guests at a June meeting.


Fran Anderson, the MFPE Chair, was chosen to receive the "Dorothy Beardmore Service to Education Award." The award was presented by State Board of Education President, Kathleen Straus, at the August 14, 2007 State Board of Education meeting. Many MFPE members were in attendance and joined Fran in celebration as she received this most prestigious honor.
